Sunday Mornings

Sunday mornings are special to Sankofie as they facilitate our most important gatherings.  Sunday mornings are the times and spaces where members come together to meet, mingle, but most importantly to teach and learn with each other, our ancestors and deities.  These are the gatherings where we not only share our journey and our achievements and encourage ourselves and others to strive, but where we also learn of the various spiritual systems that impact our lives, come into understanding of why and how we venerate our ancestors and where we tap into ancestral and indeed ‘Spirit’ guidance to help us keep our lives in balance.  As primarily a members’ only meeting place and time, Sunday mornings are our safe space, where we dare to find and  ‘try on’ our authentic selves.  The space facilitates the learning and understanding of cosmologies and spiritual systems relevant to our lives.

Sunday (Kwasiada), on a 6 weekly cycle is a holy day we refer to as Akwasidae.  This is a sacred day on the Akan calendar which consist of 9 month within which sacred days occur on a 40-42 day cycle.  These include Akwasidae, Awukudae, Fodwo, Kwabena, Fofie etc. These Sacred days are opportunities for celebration of our spiritual connections with deities and ancestors.  At Sankofie we honour Akwasidae by hosting an Akↄm which creates a space that invites Onyame, ancestors and deities and provides an opening for communication between the community and the spirit realm.  Akↄm is a form of worship that celebrates our lineage, history and culture, rooted in the cultural practices and the way of life of the Akan people of Ghana and other parts of West Africa.

On Akwasidae we open our membership space to the public as Akↄm is a space of healing and so it is for everyone.  Although we start the celebrations very early in the morning,  Akↄm is normally open to the public from 10:00 am.  We are happy to share with you here some of the conversations from our Sunday morning gatherings.
